 TESOL이란? |

TESOL은 Teaching English To Speakers of Other Languages의 줄임 말로 영어가 모국어가 아닌 사람에게 영어를 가르치는 전문 영어교사 양성 프로그램을 뜻합니다. 단순히 영어의 기본적인 Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing만을 배우는 것을 넘어 언어학적, 문화적 측면에서의 영어와 함께 효과적인 Teaching Skills, 인턴십을 함께 병행하는 전문 영어교육 관련 학문이라고 할 수 있습니다. 영어를 모국어로 사용하는 미국인이라고 해서 누구나 영어를 가르칠 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 영어를 제 2의 외국어로 사용하는 사람들에게 가장 효율적으로 언어로서의 영어와 영어권 문화를 함께 가르치는 기술을 습득하는데 주된 목적이 있습니다. 학교 프로그램에 따라 TESL(Teaching English as a Second Language), ESL(English as a Second Language), Applied Linguistics, Foreign Language Education 등등으로 분류되기도 합니다.

| TESOL의 필요성 |
|
| 영어권 국가에서도 이민자가 급증함에 따라 비영어권 출신의 이민자를 교육하는 전문교사의 수요가 늘어나고 있으며 우리나라와 같은 비영어권 국가에서도 세계공용어인 영어를 전문적으로 가르치는 전문교사의 수요는 계속 증가하고 있습니다. 이에 따라 미국에서는 대학원 과정으로TESOL 과정을 정식 학문 채택하여 가르치고 있으며 석박사 과정뿐만 아니라 단기 수료과정도 점점 증가하고 있습니다. 한국에서 전문 영어강사 또는 대학 영어교수가 되거나 영어선생님으로 진급을 하기 위해서 TESOL 수료증이 많이 요구되고 있습니다. |

| Master’s Degree VS Certificate |
|
TESOL은 2년의 과정을 통해 Master(석사)학위를 취득할 수도 있으며 공인된 기관에서 짧게는 1개월, 길게는 1년 반 정도의 기간 동안의 과정을 수료한 후 Certificate(수료증)을 취득할 수도 있습니다. 두 과정은 정식 석사 학위를 가지느냐 안 가지느냐에 가장 큰 차이점이 있습니다. 한국에 돌아와 고등교육기관에서 정식으로 인정을 받고 일하기 원하는 경우에는 Master 학위를 취득하는 것이 좋습니다.

What is the TESOL Certificate Program? How is it different from the MA?
The certificate program is designed for people who want an introduction to TESOL. It is like a sampler and takes about 6 weeks in the summer. The MA program is the regular Masters Degree, requiring from 36-41 credits. |

| About 50 institutions offer a qualification called a “certificate”, usually English as a second language of Teaching ESL(TESOL). However, this type of “certificate” is a uniformly lesser qualification than a masters. Some require only a few months of training. More common are one-year programs. |
